Between July and November the coastal town of Hermanus is one of the world’s best whale-watching locations.
Birkenhead House is an intimate, Caribbean-style property perched on a cliff above two of its finest beaches.
Days here are spent around the swimming pools (one infinity-edge and one bi-level) or surfing, fishing and swimming in the nearby waters.
Eclectic cuisine and local beverages are included and personal service is, of course, assured.
Birkenhead House consists of just 11 studio rooms, half of them opening out onto wooden verandas with splendid ocean views.
From May to December the Southern Right whale graces Walker Bay with its massive presence and can be seen from the wonderful vantage points at Birkenhead House, or up close from a custom built boat.
The two beaches near the hotel are suitable for bathing; alternatively the more active can enjoy spectacular views on walks along the coastal plain between the mountains and the ocean.
Shark diving, fishing, scuba diving and sea kayaking are just some of the other water based activities available, while golf, quad biking and horse riding are also popular.
