Barbados
Caribbean
Overview
Barbados is Britain’s favourite Caribbean island, its delightful climate, blue waters and white sand beaches being the primary reasons for its popularity.
Beyond the pristine white-sand beaches, the varied water sports and superb golf courses, there is plenty more to occupy the whole family. Bajans, as the islanders of Barbados are known, have a history of welcoming foreign visitors: their free-and-easy hospitality has many people coming back for more each year. Barbados has appropriated a long list of British quirks and traditions, from afternoon tea, cricket and horse racing, to Anglican parish churches, English place names and even a highland district called Scotland. It is hardly surprising then that Barbados is known as ‘Little England’. In spite of these endearing quirks, Barbados remains a distinctly West Indian country, peppered with rum shops, endless fields of sugar cane and the swinging rhythms of calypso. Barbados is one of the most developed Caribbean islands which means an excellent infrastructure, a choice of exclusive hotels and an abundance of exceptional restaurants.
The west coast provides the location for the best hotels and beaches, while the island as a whole is a great place to explore by car. There are plantations to visit, plenty of friendly seaside villages, old country churches and an abundance of eateries and rum bars to track down. Best of all, Barbados is a year-round destination.
